What is Link Cloaking and Why do I need to do it?

The idea is simple. If you went to my website and I wanted you to click on an outbound link, which would you rather click on? http://wheredoesthislinkgo.me/chjlg8%jhg6ghfyfhg5%5g4%4fg.html? Or http://redirectbacon.com/dogfood?

 

The whole idea behind cloaking your link is simply to give people clicking on your link a level of trust that the link isn’t going to cause them harm like getting a virus or being scammed in some way. This is especially helpful when you are cloaking affiliate links or links to other sites that have a sales page or some kind of lead caption. People want a sense of where they are going and that they will be safe going there. Using a redirect, especially a branded one with your own URL in it, decreases friction people feel clicking on your outbound links.

 

Now there is more to it of course. If you use a good link cloaking software there are also extra benefits to using a cloaked link like analytics that can help guide you to what’s working and what isn’t. So if you are just starting out and really strapped for cash, free services might be a way to start out, but I’d look into getting something more professional ASAP.
