What is a URL redirect?

URL RedirectFirst off, you need to understand that a URL redirect and a cloaked link are two different things. First, a redirected URL is a URL that is being redirected automatically from one URL to another.

Meaning, you see a link for website A, click on that link, but your web browser opens up website B automatically. So no one ever sees website A.

“URL redirection can be used for URL shortening, to prevent broken links when web pages are moved, to allow multiple domain names belonging to the same owner to refer to a single web site, to guide navigation into and out of a website, for privacy protection, and for less innocuous purposes such as phishing attacks using URLs that are similar to a targeted web site.” (Wikipedia)

So why use a Redirect? An example might be something like this. I have website A. It was a website that I created for a hair loss affiliate product. But the product creator has since decided to stop selling the product. But my website still gets a lot of traffic. So now what do I do?

You can Redirect that traffic to a new URL. So maybe you created a new hair loss website, website B, and need to get traffic to it. The simplest way is to create a redirect from the old website to the new one.

Now when someone tries to visit your A website, they are automatically redirected to the B website. Instant traffic! And using Redirect Bacon to do this, it takes 3 seconds. And you get full statistics on the amount of traffic being referred.

In addition, if you decide to use what is called an SEO Redirect for your website, or 301 redirect, you also get all of the Page Rank and SEO benefits of the old website passed on to the new website. See more here.

Meaning, suppose you had a lot of links, Facebook likes, Google +1s and all of the other things that you should be doing to rank your website in the Search Engine Result Pages (SERPs), by using a 301 Redirect, you are passing all of that goodness over to the new site. Even though the new site doesn’t have anything pointing to it at all.

Now this is what happens with a simple 301 Redirect. But with Redirect Bacon, there are a variety of Redirects and link cloaking options to choose from. Add to that Redirect Bacon’s full analytical dashboard and other high end options, and you have a professional piece of software for all of your redirect and cloaking needs.
